In August 2002 we toured with a small group through Peru, Chile and Bolivia with the tour company ‘Journey Latin America’. We flew toLima and then travelled anti-clockwise from Lima, down the coast and into Chile, then climbed to Bolivia and took the train from Puno to Cusco. From Cusco we took the train to Machu Picchu, staying overnight and returning to Cusco. We then flew from there into the rainforest for a three day stay, back to Cusco and then back to Lima for our flight home.

Getting there

Flew with KLM, so from Heathrow to Schiphol, Amsterdam, for the flight to Lima, stopping at the island of Aruba to refuel.

A quick stop at Aruba. Behind us, an hour’s flight to Amsterdam and a change of planes followed by a nine hour flight. Ahead, another three and a half to Lima.

Over the Amazon rainforest
Our first sight of the Andes
Getting near the Pacific. The mist results from the cold air of the ocean mixing with the warm air over the landmass. Lima is almost perpetually overcast in their winter, but sometimes the sun burns it off.
