After having our second-hand Thorn Explorer tandem for a couple of years, we decided that we were going to stick with tandem riding and started to think about getting one that fitted us right. Being second-hand, the Thorn\u2019s cockpit was a tad short for me and a bit long for Karon.<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

At first we were just looking at a traditional tandem but I\u2019d seen a video which featured the Hase online and a few features made it an attractive proposition. Karon never did like sitting behind me, or spending too long on the saddle and when she had a shoulder operation it all made the front recumbent seat on the Hase very attractive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The weather was kind and we had two good days out, at the end of which we decided to go ahead and order one. Ideally we would have had a Rohloff on the back but at \u00a31000 on top of the already pricey bike, we decided that might have to wait a while.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In February 2011 we headed up to JD Tandems in Gargrave<\/a> Yorkshire to spend the weekend riding a demo bike and John and Ruth\u2019s own Pino.<\/p>\n\n\n

We went back to Gargrave in May to collect the \u2018Beast\u2019 and it\u2019s first outing was the Isle of Wight Randonee \u2013 a test for us and the bike!<\/p>\n\n\n

In Sept 2011 we took the Beast over to Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany for some day riding \u2013 staying two nights in each place meant we had a full day to ride and explore before moving on, and as always, the Hase turned heads.<\/p>\n\n\n

In January 2012 we decided to ride Land\u2019s End to John O Groats (LEJOG) on the Beast and set about adding low riders and a better stand. We also bought waterproof panniers: Ortlieb Rolltops for the back and Arkel Recumbent bags for under the seat.<\/p>\n\n\n

It was essential that Karon\u2019s seat would need some weather protection when it wasn\u2019t in use, as she\u2019d found it unpleasant getting onto it after a soaking while we could take shelter, so we made up a cover out of waterproof fabric. Cost \u2013 about \u00a33.50.<\/p>\n\n\n

Initially we were just going to do the ride, but it was too good an opportunity to miss to raise some money for a good cause, so we decided on Arthritis Research UK \u2013 as Hannah our daughter has Rheumatoid Arthritis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over June and July 2012, in what was probably the wettest summer the UK has ever experienced, we took the Beast steadily northwards. As everyone says, the hills of Devon and Cornwall are the worst and I was so glad I had swapped the standard granny ring for a 22T from one of my off-road bikes. That low gear made virtually all the hills rideable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In October 2016 we took the stripped Pino back to JD tandems in Gargrave for some new drivetrain bits and cable replacements, at the same time, the frame was sent off to Bob Jacksons for a respray. The end result was \u2018The Purple Hase\u2019, seen here near Arnhem, in full touring mode, on our 2017 trip down the Rhine to the International Tandem Rally and tour of Germany.<\/p>\n\n\n

In 2019 we were abroad again, this time on our way to the International Tandem rally in Marciac, about 80km west of Toulouse. By now I had a pacemaker (fitted December 2018) and we found it harder on the climbs, so upon returning to the UK, I fitted a Bafang motor to the Pino.<\/p>\n\n\n

In France \u2013 we’d had to dismount and push the bike to reach this little hill-top village, as my pacemaker limited my heart rate to a max of 145bpm.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n

In 2022 we planned to cycle to Tecklenburg in Germany for the International Tandem Ralley there. We would be pulling a trailer and I was concerned about running out of battery too soon with the power needed to keep the loaded Pino and trailer moving, so I researched and then added a second battery housed in the rear rack.<\/p>\n\n\n

The Pino in its current (May 2025) form with a second battery and replaced original battery. Total capacity is now 13Ah on the downtube and 22.5Ah on the rack = 35.5Ah or 1278 Wh.
